Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma launched a major update to the state education system on Wednesday. He laid the foundation stone for a new Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBoSE) regional office in Shillong. The board has operated from temporary sites for nearly 45 years. It currently manages 1,329 secondary schools and 397 higher secondary schools across seven districts, while overseeing 175 exam centres and 1,300 examiners annually.
Sangma also inaugurated 81 new school buildings under Mission Education Phase-II. The state has committed Rs 457.41 crore across 2,230 schools since 2019. Officials consolidated the school network by merging units with single-digit enrollment, dropping the total count from 14,582 to 11,443. The administration also upgraded 118 schools to the higher secondary level.
To push performance, the government rolled out the CM IMPACT Guide, an AI-powered tutoring platform. Sangma reported a 41.2 percentage-point increase in pass rates since implementing these digital tools. He stated, "The government recognised early on that improving the education system required a clear roadmap rather than isolated interventions."
Financial aid reached thousands of families. The state released Rs 17.88 crore in uniform grants to 2,98,013 students. Another Rs 57.62 lakh went to 3,440 children with special needs. Grants cover transport, stipends, and home-based education. Additionally, the government announced a Rs 49.8 crore composite grant for schools.
Meghalaya’s Performance Grading Index score rose to 525.71 this year. The target remains 700 points. MLA Ampareen Lyngdoh attended the event, where Sangma noted ongoing local projects including a Rs 24-crore shopping complex at Barik and a Rs 35-crore marketing complex at Laitumkhrah.
