Shillong: Meghalaya slashed the estimated price tag for its permanent National Law University campus to 260 crore rupees. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma revealed the drop from the original 550 crore figure on Tuesday. He joined Meghalaya High Court Chief Justice Revati Mohite Dere to lay foundation stones at Mawkhanu, Mawpdang, in New Shillong Township. The site will house both the NLU and the Meghalaya State Judicial Academy.
Sangma pushed for the project despite recurring budget hurdles. He insists the state must prioritize infrastructure regardless of costs. "What has to be done must be done," he said. The Chief Minister expects these facilities to restore Shillong as a premier education hub. His administration increased the number of state higher education institutions from 75 in 2018 to roughly 110 today.
The move honors former Chief Justice Sanjiv Banerjee for his persistent advocacy. NLU Meghalaya launched in 2022 and opened its temporary site at Mayurbhanj Complex on July 8, 2023. Meanwhile, the Judicial Academy has operated out of Bivar Road since May 2016. Chief Justice Dere noted these buildings serve as more than concrete. She urged students to maintain integrity and protect the rights of the marginalized.
