Coal Truck Crash Snarls Shillong Traffic

Shillong: A 16-wheeler truck carrying coal overturned Tuesday morning at Lad Jaiaw Langsning, right across from the Rani Motors service station. The crash occurred at 5 am, blocking the busy Shillong-Guwahati road for nearly three hours. Traffic ground to a halt. The massive obstruction left STEMS school buses unable to reach pickup points from the ISBT at Mawiong. Police eventually towed and seized the truck, identified by plate number AS26 AC 1244.

East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem confirmed that authorities started an inquiry into the crash. Restrictions on truck movement stayed in force until the evening to manage the congestion. Activist Agnes Kharshiing filed a formal complaint with the Officer-in-Charge of Lumdiengjri Police Station demanding action. She alleges the vehicle breached coal transportation rules, suffered from documentation discrepancies, and carried excessive weight. She wants police to verify the cargo's origin, the driver's documents, and ownership papers.

Kharshiing requested that police check for violations under the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957. She also cited the Motor Vehicles Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The activist specifically pushed for answers regarding how the vehicle bypassed numerous security checkpoints. She wrote that police must examine the "possible lapses or complicity by enforcement officials." Kharshiing is calling for an FIR against the owner, the driver, and anyone else involved if the investigation proves illegal activity or negligence. Officials have not confirmed if an FIR exists.
