Shillong: Two hit-and-run crashes killed three young people early Monday morning. The first tragedy struck at Golf Link in Shillong at 12:30 am. Benjamin Shabong, 18, and Fabela Grace, 17, died after an unknown vehicle smashed into their scooter. First responders arrived within five minutes, but the pair was already dead. East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem confirmed they were declared dead at Shillong Civil Hospital.
Police are currently tracking down the driver. "The driver’s failure to surrender indicates culpability," Syiem said. Investigators are waiting on autopsy results to build their case.
Five minutes later at 12:35 am, a second fatal wreck occurred at Umiam Dyke. Officers found three men on the pavement next to a wrecked scooter with plate number ML05AG7001. Rahul Ch. Sangma, from South Garo Hills, died on the spot from heavy head trauma. Medics rushed the two surviving victims to Shillong Civil Hospital. Investigators found truck skid marks at the site, pointing toward a heavy vehicle. Police will take formal statements from the survivors to press ahead with the case.
