Shillong: Locals in Laban intercepted a man on Sunday after he allegedly ripped gold earrings off a woman. The victim was heading from the Anjalee Cinema area toward Civil Hospital when the thief struck. Bystanders caught the man near an indoor stadium before calling the police.
A viral social media video shows a crowd surrounding the suspect and the victim on the roadside. Officers recovered the stolen jewelry at the scene. They took the suspect for a medical exam, but the situation shifted quickly. He was found to be drug-dependent and needed urgent hospital care.
Police served the man a notice under Section 35(3) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. This requires him to report to authorities whenever summoned. Officers stated, "The man could be arrested if he fails to comply with the notice." The investigation continues as officials monitor his medical status.
