Shillong: A thief targeted a fuel tanker at a petrol pump in 3rd Mile, Upper Shillong, during the early hours of September 17. Security footage from 3 am shows a man pulling up in a Maruti Alto 800 with the license plate ML10-D-4951. He checked the tanker, drove off, and returned moments later. The suspect hauled out a pipe and containers to drain the fuel before fleeing in the same car.
This crime highlights a growing trend of fuel theft along the Shillong Bypass, Laitkor, and Lad Smit. Truckers frequently report broken locks and missing diesel after parking overnight. Concerns are mounting over the reliability of surveillance systems in these high-risk areas.
In a separate incident at a Hindustan Petroleum outlet in Laitkor, a driver from Rajouri, Jammu and Kashmir, reported the theft of 100 litres of diesel. He woke at 5 am to find his tank lock smashed. Local police reviewed CCTV footage but found no leads. The driver eventually dropped his case, saying he "no longer wished to pursue the matter."
