Shillong: A woman was stabbed in the neck Monday night while fighting off a man who snatched her phone. The attack happened at 9 pm in Umkdait, Nongmensong. The victim, who works at a garment shop called Trends, was walking home to Lumshyiap when the assailant struck. He used a sickle to wound her before trying to run away.
Locals caught the man and held him for police. Authorities took the suspect, who people identified from a video as Gunni, for a medical exam. Officers are still confirming his identity and digging into the case. Nongmensong Village Defence Party president T Thabah noted that neighbors believe three or four drug addicts operate in the area. This follows a similar robbery involving an alleged drug user near Red Cross, Laban, just days earlier.
The victim managed to stagger back to her shop after the attack. Two sisters, Daphilin and Evangeline Wahlang, spotted her bleeding and rushed her to NEIGRIHMS in their own car. The victim remains under medical care today. The sisters told reporters, "We simply wanted to help a fellow human being in distress and were not seeking recognition." Umkdait Dorbar officials and VDP members assisted in turning the suspect over to the police.
