Shillong: East Khasi Hills district administration ordered police to launch regular vice raids across Shillong. Focus areas include Khyndailad, where residents and church leaders reported commercial sexual activity near religious sites. Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Barnawal directed the Senior Superintendent of Police to keep these operations frequent. He wants consistent enforcement instead of sporadic, one-off busts.
The crackdown extends to the illegal sale of Indian Made Foreign Liquor and bootlegging. Authorities identified Polo and Demseiniong as primary trouble spots. Bootleggers there keep shops open past legal hours, fueling traffic jams and late-night chaos. "The administration had recently held a meeting with the city’s Senior Superintendent of Police to discuss the frequency of the raids and ensure sustained enforcement in areas where such activities have been reported," Barnawal said.
Liquor violations are rampant. Records show more than 11,000 cases registered in Demseiniong over the last few years. While excise raids remain active, the administration struggles with staffing. Many officers are busy handling Special Intensive Revision hearings. The DC plans to pull in the Excise Department and local community leaders to tighten the net on these recurring violations.
