Shillong: West Garo Hills is taking a stand against smog. The district officially joined the nationwide Green Diwali Campaign 2026. The push runs from October 20 to November 8.
Deputy Commissioner Vibhor Aggarwal wants the message out now. He ordered wide publicity for the event. The goal is simple: skip the fireworks to keep the air clean. The theme is, "Say No to Crackers, Yes to Clean Air."
WWF-India runs the show. They have backing from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. The effort ties into the government Mission LiFE program. That stands for Lifestyle for Environment. It aims to protect the planet and improve public health.
Firecrackers cause real damage. They pump fine particulate matter into the sky. They release toxic pollutants that choke the streets. Officials hope this campaign helps people choose an eco-friendly celebration this year.
