Gangtok: Sikkim Police issued a strict directive to district chiefs and station officers to enforce the state's total ban on firecrackers. The order, numbered 145/IGP/L&O/2026, reinforces a long-standing prohibition on the manufacture, sale, and use of all fireworks. Officials cite environmental hazards and public health risks, noting these items release poisonous gases. "The directive warns that traders and members of the public may attempt to bring firecrackers into Sikkim from Siliguri and other towns in violation of the existing restrictions."
Station House Officers must now inspect shops for illegal inventory. Border units will ramp up checks to seize smuggled goods. The directive addresses past issues involving Army and General Reserve Engineer Force canteens. Superintendents must now contact these groups to ensure no crackers enter the state through those channels. The police intend to hold formal discussions with military leadership to guarantee compliance.
The ban applies to Diwali, Losoong, Chaat Puja, and New Year celebrations. Officers received orders to apply these rules across all communities to prevent bias. Police will conduct awareness campaigns using loudspeaker announcements to gain public support. Residents are expected to observe a pollution-free holiday to keep Sikkim a model state for enforcement.
