East Khasi Hills targets illegal liquor trade in Shillong crackdown

Shillong: East Khasi Hills authorities are keeping the pressure on bootleggers. Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal confirmed Friday that teams will continue raiding illegal Indian Made Foreign Liquor operations in Urkaliar and Polo. The crackdown aims to clear the streets of unauthorized sales for good.

Joint teams of police and magistrates are currently scouting the areas. They act on complaints about bootlegging in these two specific localities. Anyone caught selling booze without a license will face the full weight of the law. Baranwal stated, "Sustained enforcement, he added, would serve as a deterrent and prevent the illegal trade from resurfacing."

Enforcement remains the priority. However, the district administration wants to change how these people survive. Officials plan to guide those currently caught in the illicit trade toward legitimate jobs. They intend to provide support for anyone willing to switch to lawful work.
