Shillong: Senior BJP leader and Pynthorumkhrah MLA AL Hek is pushing for a hardline crackdown on roadside liquor vendors operating deep into the night. Citizens are fed up. Residents reported open alcohol sales in Demseiniong and Polo, prompting Hek to demand immediate enforcement regardless of neighborhood boundaries.
Hek noted that Polo and parts of Demseiniong sit outside his constituency. Only Urkaliar falls under his watch. However, he rejected the idea that jurisdictional lines provide cover for lawbreakers. He maintains that illegal commerce has no place on the streets. "Anything illegal, they should not be allowed," he said.
The lawmaker supports people making a living. He insists these efforts stay within the boundaries of the law. "We have to operate our business; we have to operate anything that we are doing for day-to-day life; it has to be ethical and legal," he added. Officials face growing pressure to manage these unregulated liquor outlets and the unruly drinking activity that shadows the city after dark.
