Shillong: Tura MP and Congress leader Saleng A. Sangma has demanded that the Meghalaya government relocate the controversial Shillong Peak Ropeway project. He argues the current site threatens local water resources, wildlife, and forest cover in the East Khasi Hills. The project has faced stiff resistance from local residents.
Sangma stressed he is not anti-development. He noted the state should explore alternative locations like Umiam Lake, Borapani, Mawkadok, or Sohra. He said, "The government did not necessarily have to abandon the ropeway project but could shift it to a more suitable location."
The legislator also criticized the government for ignoring the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council. He highlighted the recent sealing of the construction company’s premises by a council inspector. He stated that the deployment of police in this dispute shows a lack of regard for Sixth Schedule institutions. The local Rangbah Shnong is reportedly willing to return the project's 3 crore rupees to settle the matter.
Beyond infrastructure, Sangma slammed eight former UDP legislators for defecting to the BJP. He claimed these politicians betrayed voters who elected them to protect regional interests. He urged the public to scrutinize the BJP’s ideology and its compatibility with Meghalaya’s traditional culture. He cited concerns over social hierarchies in mainland India to argue against aligning with the party.
Sangma concluded that electoral accountability remains paramount. He believes voters hold the ultimate power to reject these candidates in future elections. The shift in party loyalty continues to stir significant debate across the state.
