Shillong: The BJP returned to the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council on Wednesday. Two sitting Members of the District Council, Synshar Kupar Roy Lyngdoh Thabah and Pius Marwein, joined the party. They were among eight new recruits added to the BJP roster. This move marks the party's first presence in the 29-member council in nearly ten years.
Thabah represents Nongspung-Sohiong, which he won in 2025 by 281 votes. Marwein holds the Langrin seat, having secured his position with a margin of 2,899 votes. Their departure leaves the United Democratic Party with three MDCs, down from five. The remaining UDP members are Titosstarwell Chyne, Barikupar Synrem, and Equator Nongrang.
The Voice of the People Party maintains its majority in the council. Still, the math has shifted. Political talk now swirls around Barikupar Synrem, the brother of BJP MLA Balajied Kupar Synrem. Many wonder if he will join them too. As the party notes, "The BJP has been here before." In 2016, Neil Antonio War became the first BJP member of the council after leaving Congress.
