Shillong: The High Court of Meghalaya ordered a closer look at the Shillong-Dawki corridor vulnerability assessment. Chief Justice Revati Mohite Dere and Justice W. Diengdoh reviewed a November 5 status report filed by the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited. Dr. N. Mozika, Assistant Solicitor General of India, presented the document during the November 5 hearing of PIL No. 6 of 2026.
This report covers work from IIT Guwahati, damage to local structures, and pothole repairs. It also details compliance with court orders from September 29, 2026. The judges previously insisted that engineers use scientific studies before breaking ground in hilly terrain. "The court had earlier directed that expert reports be incorporated and scientific studies conducted before undertaking road construction in hilly areas."
These rules now cover the Guwahati-Silchar high-speed corridor, too. Amicus curiae Philemon Nongbri requested time to study the findings. He plans to inspect the site before his next court appearance. The bench pushed the next hearing to December 1, 2026. Meanwhile, the National Highways Authority of India dodged the case. Their counsel argued they do not build or maintain the road. The court agreed and ordered the Registry to remove NHAI as a respondent.
