MLA Hek Defends Durga Puja Site in RR Colony

Shillong: Senior BJP leader and Pynthorumkhrah MLA Alexander L. Hek defended the Durga Puja festivities in RR Colony on Thursday. He confirmed the celebration has deep roots. It has continued at this location for more than six decades. Hek pointed out that all cultural programs and panels stay within the temple premises, avoiding any impact on the surrounding roads.

Hek noted, "We are celebrating the Durga Puja for the last more than 60-70 years here in RR Colony. But in RR Colony, we are celebrating Puja inside the temple. All the panels are inside the temple. Everything is inside the temple." He dismissed suggestions that the event should move to a different facility next year because the current setup does not snarl traffic.

The MLA backed the Deputy Commissioner on the need to clear public thoroughfares. He insisted that no pandals should block the movement of cars or pedestrians. Hek also addressed the broader issue of public demonstrations. He stated that citizens have a right to protest as long as they stay inside the legal framework of the Constitution. He applied this rule to all demonstrations, including current events in Delhi. Any person who takes the law into their own hands faces consequences under the law, he added.
