Shillong: East Khasi Hills administrators are changing tactics to stop a spike in local petty crime. Theft has become a major headache in Shillong and its outskirts. The district administration wants to look past standard policing to address the social triggers of these offenses.
Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal confirmed that his office has flagged the issue to the police. The Superintendent of Police now holds the responsibility for the specific enforcement strategy. However, Baranwal insists that local government must dig deeper than just individual arrests. "The matter of petty crime, especially theft, had already been brought to the notice of the police," Baranwal said.
Officials plan to partner with the Social Welfare Department and civil society groups to address why these crimes happen. They suspect many offenders struggle with substance abuse, necessitating a broader social perspective. Motorbike thefts are a constant problem. Many stolen bikes show up near the Bangladesh border after passing through Pynursla.
Criminals are also hitting cars in parking lots. Online videos show thieves smashing windows to snatch audio gear. Residents are increasingly anxious as CCTV footage of break-ins continues to circulate on social media. The administration hopes that this collaborative approach will back up police work and curb the recent crime wave.
