Shillong: The Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organisations (CoMSO) demanded that the state government act now. They want the immediate implementation of the Inner Line Permit and an amendment to the Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order of 1950. These measures aim to secure land, jobs, and political representation for indigenous people.
CoMSO members want results, not delays. They criticized the government for hiding behind committees while the future of the state remains uncertain. The organization noted that the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly already threw its weight behind the ILP. Now, officials must stop stalling.
“The government must disclose the present status, recommendations and concrete steps taken with the Government of India, and ensure that the matter reaches a definite conclusion through the appropriate constitutional process,” the group said. They urged state leaders to renew talks with the Centre at the highest level immediately.
The group emphasized that the permit will not hurt tourism or legitimate business. It exists only to regulate the entry and stay of outsiders. CoMSO expects a clear roadmap with hard deadlines for both demands. If the government keeps dragging its feet, the group will consider further action.
