Shillong: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma will break ground on a new State Veterinary Hospital today. The ceremony begins at 1:30 PM at the Indo-Danish Project site in Upper Shillong. This project marks a shift in regional animal care infrastructure.
Construction starts immediately following the stone laying. The hospital intends to serve the specific needs of the local area and its livestock. Officials expect the facility to address long-standing gaps in state-level veterinary services.

The project carries a Rs 65-crore price tag and will cover 161 acres of department land. Officials designed the facility to serve as an apex referral hub that feeds into a network of district and sub-divisional centers. This hub and spoke model aims to keep complicated cases in-state, saving farmers from costly travel and treatment expenses.
The center will house advanced diagnostics, surgery, orthopaedics, and 24-hour emergency care. The government expects the facility to boost disease surveillance and food security across the region. During the ceremony, Sangma pressed the department to draft a five-year roadmap to improve equipment and staffing, noting that the goal is to make this the premier research center for the entire Northeast.

The ceremony at the INDO DAN Guest House hosted Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Minister Shanbor Shullai, Mylliem MLA Ronnie V Lyngdoh, and Chief Secretary Dr. Shakil Ahammad. Records show the current state hospital is overwhelmed, with over 25 percent of its daily caseload consisting of referrals from across the state.
Beyond physical infrastructure, the Chief Minister pushed the department to court private investment and entrepreneurship. He argued that the state must move past simple individual schemes to build an entire veterinary ecosystem that addresses gaps between supply and demand.

Beyond clinical care, the project aims to tackle zoonotic disease prevention and improve public health preparedness. Officials confirmed the facility will provide radiology and imaging services in addition to its previously announced diagnostic capabilities.
Sangma emphasized that the department must take direct ownership of the project. He warned that while the state provides the capital and infrastructure, success hinges on coordinated work across the system to ensure quality standards and strict implementation timelines.
