Shillong: The BJP launched a sharp attack against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday. They want action against MP Bimol Akoijam. Akoijam, a former JNU professor, lost his job following sexual misconduct claims. Eleven students filed complaints against him in 2024. The JNU Internal Committee investigated the matter under the POSH Act before firing him.
BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj detailed the accusations during a press conference in New Delhi. She claimed Akoijam asked female students sexually inappropriate questions during assessments. Reports also allege unwelcome physical contact and explicit classroom behavior. Swaraj noted one viva examination at his residence dragged on until 11:40 pm.
Swaraj challenged Gandhi to prove his commitment to women. She asked, "Is 'Smash the Patriarchy' only a political rhetoric for you?" She criticized the silence of party leadership, including Priyanka Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, and Sonia Gandhi. The Congress party has yet to issue a show-cause notice or launch an inquiry into their MP. Swaraj argued that this inaction proves the party treats feminism as nothing more than a hashtag.
