Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched a blistering attack on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday, November 4. Speaking at the BJP Loktantra Bachao, Arajakta Hatao padyatra in Purnia, Bihar, Sarma dismissed Gandhi's challenge for a public debate against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Sarma argued that the Leader of Opposition should conduct discussions in Parliament rather than on the street.

Sarma questioned the location of the proposed debate. He asked whether Gandhi intended to hold it in a bylane or in the House. He mocked the suggestion that RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat serve as a judge. Sarma noted that the Parliament already has a Speaker. He pointedly remarked, "Jab tak Modi ji dil chori karte rahenge tab tak vote-chori aandolan ka koi value nahi hoga."

The Assam leader also ridiculed Gandhi's call for a debate regarding an India-US deal. He asked where the actual deal was. He suggested that other topics, such as the Bofors scandal or the Bhopal gas tragedy, would be more appropriate for parliamentary review. Sarma criticized Gandhi for treating India like Bangladesh or Nepal. He further probed allegations about Gandhi’s foreign travel and a reported memorandum of understanding with the Chinese Communist Party.

Gandhi had previously proposed a public, televised debate. He listed the financial system, the Adani case, and the Epstein controversy as key talking points. He also referenced 45 defamation cases filed against him. Sarma urged the Congress leader to abandon his angry demeanor. He told him to debate peacefully and advised him to save his roses for Valentine's Day instead of Diwali. Sarma concluded that the public stands with Modi and will ensure Gandhi suffers electoral defeat in the future.
