Guwahati: Sivasagar district officials will launch an eviction drive on November 7 to clear illegal encroachments from the Yamuna waterbody. The decision arrived after a meeting Wednesday at the Deputy Commissioner office involving local representatives, government staff, and All Tai Ahom Students Union leaders.
Authorities intend to remove all unauthorized parties from the site. The district submitted a proposal to the Assam government seeking Rs 1.6 crore to compensate owners of buildings constructed on land officially allotted to them at the Yamuna site. Work continues on the broader restoration project. Officials agreed to expand the existing plan and submit a revised proposal to boost cleaning efforts.
The administration acceptance of demands prompted a change in local protest plans. The All Tai Ahom Students Union canceled a district-wide bandh originally set for November 6. Deputy Commissioner office records show that participants included the local MLA, senior department officials, and the specific individuals accused of encroaching on the waterbody. Regarding the collaborative path forward, the administration noted that the "decisions were taken after discussions between the district administration, various government departments and ATASU over the protection, restoration and removal of encroachments from the Yamuna waterbody."
