Guwahati: The Assam state Cabinet signed off on a 6,000-bigha Defence Park near Nellie in Morigaon district. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed the project aims to pull manufacturing investments into the state. Land acquisition moves ahead now. The facility covers Bhogduba, Basundhari, Alisinga, Kholapathar, and Sarumati Parbat villages, extending beyond Jagiroad.
Sarma said: "The Cabinet has approved the transfer of the identified land to the Industries Department for developing the proposed facility." Officials will combine government-owned land with private plots acquired from local residents. The government already opened talks with landowners and expects few obstacles during the process.
Assam wants more industry. Previous projects focused on fertiliser plants and semiconductor facilities, but defence manufacturing remained stagnant. The state hopes to mirror success seen elsewhere with missile and helicopter production lines. This park is the first step toward a broader defence manufacturing corridor. State leaders plan roadshows to hunt for investors and push the Centre's Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
