Bir Lachit Sena Fights Cement Plant Plan in Assam

Guwahati: Bir Lachit Sena is digging in against a proposed Max Cement factory in Sandoba village. The site sits in eastern Dharmatul within Assam's Morigaon district. On July 23, the group handed a formal request to Deputy Commissioner Anamika Tiwari demanding an immediate stop to the project.

The memorandum bears the signatures of Dharmatul Regional Committee president Deep Baishya and general secretary Hemanta Kumar Das. They argue the plant threatens public health, crops, and the local ecosystem. The proposed site borders Dharmatul Higher Secondary School and sits west of the historic Shilchang Tiwa Khala Deworja Udpur Mela venue. Dense villages and farm fields surround the area.

Locals previously sold land under the impression a different, cleaner industry would move in. Now they fear the cement factory will choke the region with pollution. The group made its position clear. "Bir Lachit Sena said it was not opposed to industrialisation or the government's development initiatives but would resist projects that could negatively impact residential areas and public welfare."

The organization wants local MLA and Assam Minister Pijush Hazarika to intervene. They urge the government to cancel the cement plant and bring in a non-polluting business instead. They promised to help if the state picks a cleaner alternative. Several key members joined the memorandum delivery, including district general secretary Dipmani Hira, organizing secretary Krishna Patar, executive members Pranab Das and Pramod Das, and member Biswajit Deka.
