Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma attacked Rahul Gandhi on August 24. He called the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha a Hindu baiter. Sarma claims Gandhi uses women's empowerment as a smokescreen to hit out at Hindu Dharma. The Chief Minister took to X to voice his frustration. He insists the Congress leader ignores patriarchal practices in other faiths.
Sarma compared Sharia to Manusmriti. He stated that Sharia acts as a binding Islamic code, while Manusmriti holds no such universal status for Hindus. He asked why Gandhi lacks the same fervour for criticising Sharia. The Chief Minister argued that Hinduism evolves with time. He questioned if Gandhi cares about equality or simply wants to bash the religion.
The criticism continued with references to the Shah Bano case and the law banning instant triple talaq. Sarma claims the Congress party record on equality is a mess. He said, "Cong rhetoric on women's rights rings hollow when measured against its own record." He pointed to Karnataka, where he claims no woman sits in the state Cabinet due to political maneuvering.
Sarma issued a direct challenge to the opposition leader. He wants to know if Gandhi will back a Uniform Civil Code. This would guarantee equal rights across all religions. The BJP continues to spar with Congress over personal laws and social reform. Sarma maintains his stance that the opposition leader is "NO champion of women's rights."
