Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma demanded an apology from Rahul Gandhi on September 26. He accused the Congress leader of spreading misinformation about the Election Commission of India. Sarma claims the Commission confirmed that decisions regarding the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls and Form 6 were unanimous. The Chief Minister argued that Gandhi and his party stoked a nationwide uproar by falsely claiming divisions within the poll body.
Sarma spoke in Delhi before traveling to Gujarat. He accused Congress of a habitual pattern of attacking constitutional pillars like the Supreme Court, the Indian Army, and the Comptroller and Auditor General. He challenged the Congress leadership to account for these claims now that the Election Commission has clarified its position.
Later, while in Gandhidham, Sarma dismissed opposition allegations of electoral malpractice in Assam. He mocked the Leader of Opposition during a press event at the DPA Exhibition Ground. Regarding Gandhi, Sarma stated, "Isn't he mad? Why are you asking me to comment on a mad person? I consider Rahul Gandhi a mad person." He claimed that opposition parties focus on these issues simply because they lack significant governing responsibilities.
Sarma joined Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal to launch a new 150-tonne-per-day e-methanol plant. This port-based facility at the Deendayal Port Authority is the first of its kind in India. The project involves Assam Petrochemicals Limited, which currently produces 500 tonnes of methanol daily. Construction on the site should finish within three years.
