Assam CM slams Rahul Gandhi over Meloni joke

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma lashed out at Rahul Gandhi on August 13. He accused the Congress leader of crossing, "every line of decency," after a joke surfaced involving Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. The tension ignited during the Rachnatmak Congress National Convention.

Gandhi mocked Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the event. He criticized the government for prioritizing personal friendships with foreign leaders over national interests. Gandhi claimed the Prime Minister’s job is to protect India rather than engage in hollow diplomatic embraces. He performed a mock hug with Congress leader Sandeep Dixit on stage to drive his point home. Dixit then quipped, "You weren't hugging me thinking I was Meloni?"

Sarma watched the video of the exchange and vented his frustration on X. He slammed the Congress party for its dynastic leadership and for targeting a woman leader from a friendly nation. Sarma noted that the audience and women on stage laughed at the remark. He called the behavior an attempt to sabotage foreign relations. The Chief Minister declared, "When disrespect towards women becomes a source of amusement, it speaks volumes about the culture being encouraged. Disgraceful. Shameful."
