Guwahati: Assam Congress leaders took aim at the BJP on July 19. They threw their weight behind Rahul Gandhi’s Chatro Ki Gunj campaign. The party ripped into the Centre and the state government for failing students. Exam paper leaks are rampant. Infrastructure is crumbling. The party claims education has become a commodity.
MLA Abdur Rahim spoke at Rajiv Bhawan in Guwahati. He demanded answers from the Union Education Ministry. Rahim blasted Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan for staying in office despite constant leaks. He said, "Dharmendra Pradhan had not resigned despite multiple paper leak incidents." Rahim invoked the memory of Lal Bahadur Shastri to highlight the current government's lack of moral accountability.
The criticism went beyond the classroom. Former MLA Satyabrata Kalita detailed the collapse of state services. He pointed to teacher shortages and delayed textbooks. School uniforms are poor. Medical colleges face staffing crises, with leaders claiming the state shuffles employees between buildings to fake readiness for official inspections. Kalita also slammed the city’s drainage, noting that Guwahati still drowns in water whenever it rains.
The Congress party pushed for immediate change. They condemned the arrest of two artists for painting Sonam Wangchuk. They also attacked the forced removal of Wangchuk from his protest site. Party officials want the Assam Assembly to dedicate a session to fix the education sector. APCC Media Department chairman Bedabrata Bora said the system hurts poor students. He wants schools to stop prioritizing high marks over student well-being. Rahul Gandhi will keep meeting youth in Kota, Dehradun, and beyond to build a Youth Manifesto.
