Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma slammed the Congress party for its historic record on Kaziranga National Park. He spoke in Delhi on Wednesday, August 26. Sarma declared that the park currently sits without an eco-sensitive zone. He insists the BJP remains the sole protector of the region's wildlife.
Sarma took aim at the former administration. He specifically targeted the late former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, who is the father of current Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi. The Chief Minister made a bold claim. "If Gaurav Gogoi's father had remained Chief Minister for another five years, there would not have been a single rhino left in Kaziranga," Sarma told reporters.
The rhetoric escalated quickly. Sarma demanded a formal apology from the Congress party for what he labeled the destruction of the habitat during their tenure. "Congress destroyed Kaziranga. BJP has protected Kaziranga," he stated. He maintains that his government’s conservation measures saved the park.
The spat erupts as a debate rages over land use and development near the protected area. Kaziranga stays central to Assam’s identity as a home for the one-horned rhinoceros. Politicians now fight over who keeps the animals safe.
