Guwahati: Senior Congress leader and Dhubri MP Rakibul Hussain blew the whistle on October 7. He accused the ruling BJP of rigging the Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll. Hussain demanded a repoll at specific stations. He cited large-scale irregularities in the Samaguri Assembly segment during Tuesday's vote.
Hussain held a press conference at Rajiv Bhawan to vent his grievances. He claimed the BJP made a calculated attempt to "steal" the entire by-election process. The Congressman pointed to serious issues at several polling stations in Samaguri. He asked the Election Commission to step in and order fresh voting.
The Nagaon District Congress Committee filed a formal complaint. They want the Election Commission of India to take action immediately. Hussain alleged that unidentified people in roughly 11 vehicles stormed several polling stations to rig the results. He stopped short of naming the intruders or listing every affected booth. He also hammered BJP candidate Devashish Sharma over his conduct during the race.
The dust settled after a 76 percent turnout on Tuesday. Election officials claimed the day was peaceful across all eight Assembly segments. They confirmed some minor EVM glitches but swapped the bad machines out quickly. The contest pits BJP’s Devashish Sharma against Congress candidate Sibamoni Bora and AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal. Nobody has independently verified the rigging claims yet. The Election Commission stayed quiet on the complaint. Officials will count the votes on October 9.
