Guwahati: The Bharatiya Janata Party officially tapped Devasish Sharma as its candidate for the Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election on September 13. State party president Dilip Saikia delivered the nomination papers at the Guwahati headquarters, where Morigaon district president Ram Prasad Sarkar accepted the ticket on Sharma's behalf. The candidate transition moved fast. Sharma, a former administrative officer and Nagaon district commissioner, joined the BJP ranks only on September 8 alongside journalists Lenin Saurav Bora and Gunjan Kalita at the Vajpayee Bhawan.
The Nagaon seat sits empty after ex-Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi resigned to join the Assam Assembly. Voters head to the polls on October 6, and officials will count the ballots on October 9. The contest carries heavy weight. Congress leader Ripun Bora told the press the race is a "very crucial" fight that could shape national political trends and impact the party's roadmap for the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.
Congress is scrambling to pick a nominee. Assam in-charge Bhupesh Baghel recently finished a series of deep-dive meetings with party wings and organizational units to gauge their standing. Baghel, alongside Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaurav Gogoi and opposition leader Wazed Ali Choudhury, met with alliance partners in Guwahati to finalize a platform. The coalition plans to hit the campaign trail focusing on local floods and illegal mining.
