Guwahati: The Kuki-Zo community gathered at the TAI Educational and Cultural Centre in Boiragimoth on November 1 to celebrate Chavang Kut. This annual harvest festival marks the end of jhum cultivation. People gathered to show gratitude for their yearly blessings.
First held in Dibrugarh in 2006, the event drew a large crowd. Pu P. Thangsuanhau Phiamphu hosted the day while Kut-Pa Pu Lianbel Vaiphei inaugurated the proceedings. Pastor Joseph Thangew led the opening prayer, followed by a devotional service and a condolence session hosted by Pu P. Chongloi.
Chief guest Pi N. Boisi Misao, Regional Director of the Directorate of Training and National Vocational Education and Training, addressed the assembly. She pushed for internal solidarity. “We are second to none in all spheres of life; we only need to be united.”
Guest of Honour Pu Letson Chongloi, Chief Manager of the State Bank of India, noted the value of these gatherings for younger generations. Lamkholal Doungel, an Advisor to Kuki Inpi Assam, warned the crowd against divisive political narratives. He urged the community to guard their collective identity.
The cultural program featured music from Nu Hatshi Lhungdim, Nu Unice Sitlhou, Julie Lupheng, and Nu Hetin Haokip. Traditional troupes from Duliajan and Dibrugarh performed alongside local children. The festivities ended with a closing prayer by Pa Seikholen Lhungdim and a traditional feast.
