Shillong: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma lashed out at state Congress President Gaurav Gogoi on Saturday. This followed Gogoi's Thursday claim that Sarma would land in prison the moment Rahul Gandhi becomes Prime Minister. The CM dismissed the threats as election-season distractions.
Sarma questioned the logic behind the Congress rhetoric. He pointed out the 2029 date for the next Lok Sabha election. "When elections come, one should think about votes, not jail," Sarma stated. He labeled Rahul Gandhi a madman for the perceived timeline.
The Chief Minister argued that politicians must focus on the public. He cited roads, schools, colleges, and welfare schemes as the only topics that matter to citizens. Voters decide elections, he reminded his rivals. "Prisoners in jail do not vote. The general public votes," Sarma said.
This feud stems from ongoing friction between the BJP and Congress in Assam. The opposition party regularly targets the administration over legal and political grievances. Sarma countered these attacks by calling for a return to governance and development debates. He previously traded similar insults with Gandhi during the arrest of Nandigram bypoll candidate Milan Pradhan.
