Prime Minister Modi Mourns Death of Meghalaya Leader Bir Bahadur Chettri

Shillong: Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent a letter to Malati Chettri after her husband, veteran Meghalaya leader Bir Bahadur Chettri, died on August 15. The Prime Minister lauded Chettri for his decades of state service. He praised his focus on solving local issues. Modi stated, "Chettri’s commitment to addressing people’s issues and his spirit of service would be remembered with respect by the people of Meghalaya."

Chettri spent 28 years as the founder Secretary of the Governing Body at Bhanu Bhakta Saraswati College in Shillong. He held that post from 1993 until 2019 before transitioning to Vice President. Faculty and staff held a memorial service for him on August 17. They observed a minute of silence to mark his passing.

The veteran leader left behind a legacy of educational development. Before his work in academia, he served as a Section Officer for the North Eastern Council Secretariat. Colleagues highlighted his immense influence on the Gorkha community and the region.
