Commuters blast construction quality of new Shillong-Dawki highway

Shillong: The new 11-km four-lane highway connecting Shillong and Upper Shillong is failing fast. Completed only months ago, the 350-crore project shows signs of rapid decay. Large stretches of the road have sunk, forcing crews to apply numerous patches already. Drivers fear the infrastructure will not last. "If this is the condition of a road just months after completion, its longevity is highly questionable," one daily commuter said.

The project slashed travel times to a mere 10 to 15 minutes. Even so, the public is demanding accountability for the sub-par build quality. Encroachments further clog the route. Despite a directive issued three months ago by the East Khasi Hills district administration to clear the Right of Way, the road remains blocked.

Hawkers and cars occupy space near Rilbong Point, 3½ Mile, and Mattilang Park. The Baniun flyover presents a different set of problems. It has turned into a hangout spot. Vehicles park there late at night, while youths use the space for stunts and speeding. These activities create constant hazards for regular traffic.
