Imphal: The Hungpung Village Administrative Council (HVAC) started a major eviction drive on Tuesday. They are clearing roadside encroachments, makeshift sheds, and piles of sand or stones from National Highway-102. The cleanup began at the Hungpung Mayora area. It will push through the Humpum/Hungpung and Dungrei sectors.
Increasing traffic volume forced the Council to act. HVAC Chairman Eno. Akui YL noted that illegal storage and narrow roads create hazards for everyone. The Council gave residents a 45-day deadline to clear the area back on April 28, 2026. Many failed to comply. JCB machinery moved in Tuesday to demolish sheds and haul away construction materials.
Akui defended the sweep. He stated, “Since this is a National Highway, maintaining a clear passage is not merely a matter of convenience but a matter of public safety.” The Council representatives led the effort to ensure the road remains open for emergency services and daily commuters.
The drive continues until the entire stretch is clear. Akui urged residents to stop wrong-side parking and blocking drainage lines. He argued that the work serves the greater good. “With the number of vehicles using NH-102 increasing every day, it is essential that we act before an avoidable accident or other untoward incident occurs,” he said. The Council insists this is a civic initiative to improve safety for the entire community.
