Guwahati: Cachar district authorities launched a major eviction drive Wednesday, August 5, to clear illegal structures along the Meherpur-Medical Road in Silchar. Bulldozers moved in early to flatten shops and buildings occupying public land. The state government needs this space to build a four-lane road.
A massive force of local police and Central Reserve Police Force members stood guard. They kept the peace while machinery tore down permanent and temporary structures. The area had been clogged for years, causing constant headaches for local commuters.
Officials stated they issued notices to all encroachers well before the operation. The crews only moved in after the deadline passed. According to the administration, the drive ensures the smooth execution of the project: "The eviction drive was carried out after the notice period expired."
Locals cheered the work. They expect the new corridor to slash traffic and fix regional connectivity. The upgrade follows a recent funding approval by the state government.
