Assam Man Performs Last Rites for Living Daughter Following Conversion

Guwahati: Binay Sharma performed symbolic last rites for his living daughter at the Panchanan Shivbari temple in Silchar on November 7. He conducted the rituals alongside a priest, placing a white garland over a photograph of his daughter, Vaishali Sharma. He offered pind daan to formally mark her as dead to the family.

Trouble started years ago. Vaishali married a man named Parikh from Rajasthan roughly 12 years back, and the pair had two children. Sharma claims the marriage soured, leading Vaishali to abandon her family and move to Bengaluru five or six years ago. She stayed in contact by phone occasionally.

The family discovered on Wednesday that Vaishali returned to Silchar, converted to Islam, and married a man from the Itkhola area. Sharma sought help from the Bajrang Dal after hearing the news. He claims he cannot accept her life choices. Explaining his actions, Sharma said, "I could not accept her decision to leave her husband and children." The ritual has sparked intense debate throughout the Silchar community.
