Imphal: A Manipur court sentenced 58-year-old Md. Abdul Halim to life in prison on Friday, November 6, 2026. Sessions Judge Kh. Ajit ordered the sentence and a Rs 10,000 fine for the 2013 murder. Halim, a resident of Kwakta Khuman, was convicted on August 11 under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code. He will get credit for time already served behind bars.
The killing happened on June 14, 2013, at a rental home in Golapati Maning Leikai Tangki Makhong. Halim stabbed his wife, Amubi, multiple times with a knife. He fled the scene immediately after the attack. Officers tracked him to a nearby house and took him into custody that same evening.
The prosecution built their case on 15 witness testimonies, 21 documents, and eight physical items found at the scene. Public Prosecutor Tongbram Bipinchandra pushed for a harsh penalty. He argued that the "nature of the attack warranted the severest punishment available under the law."
Defense lawyers asked for mercy. They cited his lack of a criminal record, his age, and his recent participation in religious activities as reasons for a lighter sentence. The court ultimately denied the request for leniency.
