Guwahati: Zakir Hussain Mazumdar died Wednesday evening after a speeding motorcycle struck him on National Highway 306. The crash happened near Aulia Bazar in Uttar Krishnapur, Silchar, at approximately 7 pm. Mazumdar, a 60-year-old resident of Barhali in Sonai, worked as a night watchman at a workshop adjacent to the crash site. He was crossing the road when the impact killed him instantly.

The rider ditched the bike and ran. Locals reported the abandonment before police arrived at the scene. Rangirkhari police showed up an hour later to collect the body, which now sits at the Silchar Medical College and Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem exam.

Anger simmered among the witnesses. Sonai police arrived two hours after the accident, drawing sharp criticism from the crowd gathered at the site. One local resident noted the frustration, stating, "Tension reportedly prevailed in the area when Sonai Police arrived around two hours after the incident, drawing criticism from people gathered at the scene over the delay in their arrival."
