Guwahati: Violence erupted in the Ghaniala area of Malugram, Silchar, on Sunday, August 2. Locals reported a cow was slaughtered at 6 a.m., sparking immediate unrest. Bajrang Dal members swarmed the scene to demand the arrest of the perpetrators.
Police arrived and detained an auto-rickshaw driver for questioning. The mob turned on the detainee when they could not locate the main suspect. Members of the crowd assaulted the driver and abducted a relative for their own interrogation. Officers rescued the men and restored a semblance of order.
Tensions spiked again when a bystander shouted religious slogans. The crowd attacked this person, forcing authorities to flood the area with additional police and paramilitary units. Police currently maintain a heavy guard over the neighborhood while searching for the primary suspects.
The Bajrang Dal is now applying pressure on local law enforcement. They demand strict enforcement of the Assam Cattle Preservation Act of 2021. The group issued a firm warning regarding their next moves. "If the main accused is not arrested and legal action is not initiated within the stipulated period, it will launch a larger agitation in the Malugram and Ghaniyala areas," the organization stated.
