Guwahati: An 11-month-old child died at Silchar Medical College and Hospital on July 19, triggering angry protests over alleged medical malpractice. The child, a resident of South Mohanpur in Sonai, was admitted at 3 pm on July 18 with an infection. Father Azad Hussain Laskar said his baby appeared stable after receiving two injections. The infant then took a turn for the worse after a nurse gave a third shot.
Hospital staff moved the baby to the Intensive Care Unit. Doctors failed to save the patient. Family and neighbors swarmed the facility to demand a full investigation into the death. They blamed the attending nurse and doctors for the tragedy. Cachar Police DSP Bhaskar Saikia and the officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station arrived to calm the crowd and restore order.
Hospital administrators claimed the infant was critical upon ICU admission. They insisted medical staff did everything possible to save the child. Management has started an internal inquiry. The hospital stated, "The exact cause of death and other details surrounding the case would be disclosed officially after the investigation report is received."
