Aizawl: Truck drivers and owners in Cachar district launched an indefinite sit-in at the Lailapur Bypass on Sunday, August 30. The protest started at 6 pm. The Silchar Truck Drivers' Association aims to stop the movement of goods-laden trucks into Mizoram until their demands for safety and fair treatment are met.
Drivers claim they face persistent obstruction and harassment while moving cargo. The association alleges that authorities restricted certain goods and blocked trucks carrying sand from Assam to Mizoram. Operators say they face pressure to hand over shipments to local Mizoram drivers instead. This creates a mess for their livelihoods and business. The association previously pushed for a steering chhodo, or stop-driving, agitation to force change.
The union demands equal opportunities for inter-state operators and full protection for Assam-based drivers. The protest will continue indefinitely. "The association has said the sit-in at Lailapur Bypass will continue indefinitely until its demands are met." The ongoing standoff could paralyze the flow of goods along the Lailapur route if left unresolved.
