Guwahati: More than 100 truck drivers shut down the highway at Lailapur in Assam’s Cachar district on September 1. They are refusing to move. This blockade began on August 31 and marks the third day of the standoff. Drivers claim they face constant hostility and intimidation when crossing into Mizoram. They refuse to start moving goods again until they see concrete safety guarantees from the Assam and Mizoram governments.
Cachar district officials arrived on September 1 to clear the road. The truckers blocked them out. They parked heavy vehicles across the asphalt to stop traffic entirely. Dozens of trucks now sit idle on the key interstate corridor. This halt chokes the flow of essential goods into Mizoram. The drivers argue that authorities must prioritize their protection over simply clearing the route.
Police and district administrators remain on site to watch the crowd and keep the peace. Talks are happening now to settle the dispute. One transporter noted, "The transporters maintained that they would not allow commercial consignments to proceed beyond the Lailapur checkpoint until the governments of Assam and Mizoram put in place concrete measures to ensure the safety and security of truck drivers." Officials continue to seek a path to restore normal commercial movement.
