Guwahati: Lailapur Police stopped two 12-wheeler trucks on the Silchar-Aizawl National Highway on July 21. They found more than 1,000 bags of urea fertilizer tucked under food shipments. Officers detained four men, including two drivers and two helpers. The trucks were headed for Mizoram.
Police grew suspicious during a routine check at the Lailapur Police Patrol Post. The suspects claimed they only carried food. A physical search proved otherwise. Authorities are still calculating the total weight and market value of the seized goods. Investigators believe the fertilizer, meant for Assam farmers, was bound for Myanmar.
"Investigations are underway to ascertain the source of the fertiliser, its intended destination, the identity of the actual consignor and consignee, and whether a larger smuggling network is involved."
Senior officers arrived to manage the scene, including Additional Superintendent of Police Rajat Kumar Pal, DSP Dilraj Pathak, DSP Bhaskar Saikia, CDSP Pradip Kumar, and Lailapur Patrol Post In-charge Subhajit Dutta. Police are now digging through transport records and interrogating the four suspects. They hope to uncover the full scope of the smuggling operation soon.
