Guwahati: Security forces dealt a major blow to smuggling syndicates this week. A joint operation by Assam Rifles, Assam Police, and the Mizoram Forest Department led to eight arrests and the recovery of contraband valued at over Rs 26 crore.
In Assam, authorities targeted the Motinagar area of Bhuban Pahar in Cachar district. The team grabbed 1.1 lakh Yaba tablets, a mix of methamphetamine and caffeine, alongside 223 grams of heroin stuffed into 10 soap cases. The stash carries an estimated international market value of Rs 25 crore. Police also took two mobile phones used by the network. Three suspects remain in custody, facing charges under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act of 1985.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed the haul on social media. "The drug mafia continues to face the full force of the law in Assam. In a joint operation by Cachar Police and Assam Rifles, a major narcotics consignment of 1.1 lakh Yaba tablets and 223 grams of heroin worth Rs 28 crore has been seized," Sarma stated. The government vows to keep the pressure on.
Meanwhile, the operation shifted to Lawngtlai, Mizoram. Officials at Hmawngbuchhuah village intercepted 311 bags of Paris polyphylla, a protected plant known as Anchiri. The haul weighed 10,574 kg and hit a value of Rs 1.05 crore. Five people were arrested, and five transport vehicles were impounded. The Forest Department now holds the evidence.
Officials point to Mizoram's geography as the primary headache. The state sits near the Golden Triangle, a massive drug production hub. It features a 510-km unfenced border with Myanmar and a 318-km stretch bordering Bangladesh. Intelligence units have ramped up surveillance to choke these transit routes for good.
