Agartala: Tripura recorded 134 road deaths through August 2026. Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury confirmed the drop in fatalities at an Agartala safety event. The state logged 577 accidents and 261 deaths in 2023. Figures shifted to 578 crashes with 226 deaths in 2024, followed by 527 crashes and 197 deaths in 2025. Data indicates 413 accidents occurred through August 2026.
Officials attribute the downward trend to tighter police enforcement and coordination. Authorities cracked down on traffic violations, issuing 1,863 challans for auto-rickshaw offenses. These included 835 permit breaches, 328 color-code violations, 480 parking infractions, and 220 cases of overloading. Police also fined 485 drivers for non-standard number plates, collecting over Rs 2 lakh. Another 39 violators received notices.
Chowdhury wants more public engagement. He detailed three federal initiatives to help victims. Under the PM-RAHAT scheme, 336 residents received cashless treatment totaling Rs 6.16 lakh, with a cap of Rs 1.5 lakh per person. For hit-and-run incidents, families receive Rs 2 lakh for fatalities and Rs 50,000 for injuries.
The Rah-Veer initiative rewards rescuers with Rs 25,000 for transporting victims during the golden hour. Eleven people qualified in 2025, with seven more this year. Chowdhury noted, "greater public awareness and adherence to traffic rules could help reduce fatalities on Tripura's roads." He directed local officials to spread awareness in every household, as road safety requires constant vigilance, not just annual events.
