Agartala: Tripura’s road accidents dropped by 13 percent recently. Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury announced the decline Tuesday at a two-day workshop in Agartala’s Pragna Bhawan. Vehicle ownership spiked over the last five years, but coordinated work between the Transport Department and police kept the roads safer. Better enforcement and awareness campaigns drove the shift.

The state boosted its emergency response by deploying 16 modern ambulances and interceptor vehicles. Chowdhury highlighted the national Rahavir Scheme, which protects good Samaritans, and the PM Rahat cashless treatment program. Accident victims can now access medical coverage worth 1.5 lakh rupees. He noted: "Road safety is a shared responsibility."

Supreme Court directives remain the priority. Chowdhury plans to run similar workshops in every district to sustain the momentum. The Agartala session included Er Susanta Datta from SIPARD, Additional Secretary Subrata Choudhury, Maharashtra ARTO Sachin Ashok Bodhale, and Tripura Police IGP Monchak Ipper.
