Guwahati: Tutors hired in Assam back in 2021 are demanding their promised promotions. They want Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal to intervene. The five-year wait is up. Nothing has changed.
A delegation from the Sadiya Tutor Association met Sonowal at his Dibrugarh home on August 27. Representatives from Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Tinsukia, and Dibrugarh joined the meeting to submit a formal memorandum. Uma Deori and Umakanta Deori led the group.
The state government hired these tutors when Sonowal served as Chief Minister. Then Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma handed out the letters. Officials promised that these tutors would move into full teacher roles within five years. They also pledged a one-time Rs 10 lakh gratuity for anyone who retired or died, regardless of how little time they served.
The tutors say the clock ran out. The promotion never happened. They also struggle on a monthly salary of Rs 12,000 for work in Middle English Schools. Sonowal reacted to the pay rate with shock. He promised to talk to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma soon. The association believes Sonowal is the right man to fix this because "the appointments and assurances were made during his tenure and in his presence."
The tutors are waiting for a result. They need the government to act now.
