Guwahati: Assam is shaking up its skill development system. Skill, Employment and Entrepreneurship Minister Biswajit Daimary led review meetings at Janata Bhawan on September 23 to map out the state's new direction. Officials now plan to build a Global Skill Centre in Guwahati alongside satellite hubs in Silchar, Bongaigaon, and Dibrugarh.
The state wants to roll out a future-skills programme in 800 schools using a Hub-and-Spoke model. It is a big lift. The government also intends to strengthen Industrial Training Institutes while upgrading faculty training and certification processes. Minister Daimary emphasized the need for teamwork, stating, "Daimary reviewed the progress of the various programmes and called for coordination between departments to ensure their implementation."
New externally aided projects are on the table to fund these initiatives. Meanwhile, the Directorate of Employment and Craftsmen Training is looking to grow its industry partnerships. Youth empowerment also took center stage after the bifurcation of the Sports and Youth Welfare Department. Leaders from the National Cadet Corps, Bharat Scouts and Guides, and the Assam Youth Commission met to draft a fresh framework for the state's young people.
Culture projects are moving forward too. The Indigenous and Tribal Faith and Culture Department announced the Oitijyo Museum Festival 2026 to highlight heritage. Experts are also pushing for UNESCO World Heritage status for the Rangpur Sivasagar Historic Ensemble. Conservation plans for the Deoparvat site in Golaghat and the Garh Doul and Sri Sri Gupteswar Devalaya sites in Sonitpur remain a top priority.
